Arsenal Fall 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund and Lose the 2026 Emirates Cup
Arsenal Football Club suffered another setback in their preparations for the 2026-2027 season. On Sunday 9 August 2026, in front of their home crowd at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners were beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup final. The Germans quickly took control of the match and led 2-0 at half-time before Arsenal staged a fightback. Despite goals from Ethan Nwaneri and Viktor Gyökeres, Dortmund held on to claim the trophy. This defeat comes just days after Arsenal’s 1-3 loss to Real Betis and has already raised questions about the defensive solidity of Mikel Arteta’s side.
The match quickly swung in Borussia Dortmund’s favour. In the 7th minute, Samuele Inacio opened the scoring after being played through inside the box. Arsenal tried to respond but lacked cutting edge in front of goal. Viktor Gyökeres struck the crossbar following a well-worked move involving Martin Ødegaard.
Dortmund doubled their lead in the 29th minute. Eighteen-year-old Konstantinos Karetsas produced a superb finish to make it 2-0. Arsenal went into the break two goals behind.
After the restart, Mikel Arteta’s men showed a different intensity. Ethan Nwaneri pulled a goal back in the 54th minute after excellent work down the left from Christos Tzolis. The young Greek winger, a recent arrival at Arsenal, was one of the standout performers of the evening.
Just as Arsenal looked capable of mounting a full comeback, another defensive lapse allowed Dortmund to restore their two-goal cushion. In the 58th minute, Joane Gadou scored the Germans’ third goal from a poorly defended corner. The ball was initially saved but the Arsenal defence failed to clear their lines.
Arsenal refused to give in. In the 69th minute, Christos Tzolis won a penalty. Viktor Gyökeres converted from the spot to make it 3-2. The closing stages became frantic as the Gunners desperately searched for an equaliser.
In the dying moments, Gabriel Martinelli thought he had levelled the score. His effort in stoppage time was ruled out for offside. Arsenal therefore had to settle for a 3-2 defeat and surrender the Emirates Cup to Dortmund. A pre-arranged penalty shoot-out followed the final whistle, which Arsenal won 5-4, but it had no bearing on the trophy.
Beyond the result, the match highlighted some of Arsenal’s current issues. The Gunners have now conceded multiple goals in consecutive pre-season fixtures, several of them from avoidable defensive situations, particularly set-pieces.
Mikel Arteta admitted afterwards that his team needs to improve. The Spanish coach said Arsenal had conceded goals too cheaply and that the whole group must raise its competitive level. He also noted that several key players are still building up match fitness after the international break.
Despite the defeat, there were positives. Christos Tzolis looked particularly dangerous, providing an assist and winning the penalty. Martin Ødegaard created several chances, while young players Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri again showed their ability to offer creativity and energy. Dortmund’s young talents (Inacio, Karetsas and Gadou) also shone.
Arsenal’s pre-season is not yet over. After this loss to Dortmund, the Gunners face Como on 12 August before contesting the Community Shield against Manchester City on 16 August. These matches will give Arteta further opportunities to integrate players and address the problems seen during this preparation period.
The 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund serves as a warning for Arsenal just days before the start of the major fixtures of the new season. The Gunners showed encouraging attacking qualities and a strong response after going 2-0 down, but their defensive frailties remain a concern. The Emirates Cup result should nevertheless be kept in perspective, as it was a pre-season match. Mikel Arteta still has time to bring his internationals back up to speed, strengthen squad cohesion and correct the defensive errors. With several important players still to be fully integrated, Arsenal will hope to turn this difficult period into useful preparation ahead of the first big tests of the 2026-2027 campaign
