Los Angeles Elections: Karen Bass Leads but Heads to Runoff in a Climate of Strong Political Polarization

The Los Angeles municipal primaries held on June 2, 2026, have set the stage for a highly contested fall campaign. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass failed to reach the 50% threshold needed for outright re-election in the first round. With approximately 78% of ballots counted (over 675,000 votes), she leads with 34.8% of the vote — a relatively low score for an incumbent mayor.

She is ahead of Republican candidate and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who garnered 27.3%, and progressive City Councilmember Nithya Raman, with 26.2%. The battle for second place remains extremely tight, with Pratt holding a lead of roughly 7,500 votes, and thousands of ballots still to be counted.

Forced into a November runoff, Karen Bass faces intense scrutiny of her record, particularly her “Inside Safe” program aimed at addressing the city’s homelessness crisis. While the mayor highlights thousands of rehoused individuals, many voters expressed frustration over the slow visible progress in neighborhoods like Hollywood, Venice, and Skid Row. Soaring inflation and the ongoing housing crisis affecting the middle class also weighed heavily on the results. Her two main challengers represent sharply contrasting visions for the city. Spencer Pratt ran a populist, right-leaning campaign focused on public safety, cracking down on organized retail theft (“smash-and-grab”), and restoring order and cleanliness. He performed strongly in more conservative areas such as the San Fernando Valley, boosted by a savvy social media presence and support from conservative donors.

Nithya Raman, on the other hand, challenged Bass from the left, criticizing her concessions to the LAPD and lack of boldness on rent control. Backed by tenant unions and progressive youth, she consolidated support in densely populated renter-heavy neighborhoods. The upcoming runoff will serve as a referendum on the future direction of Los Angeles. The key question will be vote transfers: will Nithya Raman’s supporters rally behind Karen Bass to block Spencer Pratt, or could high abstention threaten the incumbent’s political survival?

Los Angeles is bracing for a high-tension political autumn, serving as a microcosm of the ideological battles dividing California and the entire country.
